Things To Do In Kenya: Im sure you have been to a couple of websites looking for information on what to do in Kenya.
Roger Whittaker, a white man born in Kenya, tells you through his music the things to do in Kenya.
He lived in Kenya for about 20 years and then returned to England and became an entertainer.
He told his wife stories about Kenya and finally decided to take her back to Kenya -and it was then that he did this video - Roger Whittaker in Kenya - A Musical Safari'.
I love Roger Whittaker. We grew up listening to his music as children. Discovering these songs on You Tube was like finding my young self again.
Song One: Im Back To Where I Belong
Roger sings this song as he and his wife leave England for the City in the Sun - Nairobi. You will see him travel through the capital city, Nairobi and into the Rift Valley, the home of the Masai Mara.
There are other things that you can do in Kenya such as Visit the Nairobi Safari Walk, Giraffe Center, Karen Blixen and the National Museum, Dances at the Bomas Cultural Center and much more.
Song Two: My Land Is Kenya
My Land is Kenya, So Warm and Wild and Free.......
In this song, Roger remembers his childhood, the faces of the friends he has, the tree he used to climb, the smiling faces. This man really loves Kenya....I tell you!!
Some of the faces you see at the begining are people at the coast region - you can tell from the muslim look attire. There are also clips of Masai people as well.
Song Three: Chengele
Roger sang the next song in the Masai Mara with some people from the Nandi tribe. He describes the African guitar which he combines with this western one and they make merry under the pitch black African night with the sounds of animals and tiny insects in the background.
They still do this in Kenya you know and its is one of the things to do in Kenya that are off the itinerary and add abit of fun to your say. Just gather round a fire in the night at the campsite or lodge and sing away.
Song Four: Shimoni
The last part of the video, Roger flies to the Coast. In his own words, he describes it as a place where much of Kenya's history was written. From King Solomon of the Bible times, the portuguese, the Europeans and the Arabs.
He focuses on Slave trade which was a common practice by the Arabs and he shows us Shimoni Caves where the slaves were hid....Watch on
Song Five: The Good Old E.A.R and H. (East African Railways and Habours
I can see why Roger sand about the Railways in Kenya. He says that it gives him all the good memories of going to school and going down to the Coast.
We used the train once to the coast and I remember that ride like it was yesterday. The railway still looks like it did and I can take you down to Mombasa by train if you like.
Song Six: Come With Me on An Ocean Of Blue
That's it. The Coast. Lovely Lovely. My best memories as a child are those that I spent at the coast.
As Roger sings, ..."the water is warm, just waiting for you, come with me catching tropical fish...watch the weary world turning on its own...you can stretch yourself and laugh in the morning sun, you can take a boat and sail it for a while..... really you need to come to Kenya.
Song Seven: Did You Really Have To
This song is set in a disco in Malindi. If you are looking for things to do in Kenya, Malindi, along the northern coast of Kenya has some pretty exciting things. Marine sports is a clear winner in this area.
Song Eight: Man, man, man..
In this song, Roger sings about Poaching and how it destroys Kenyas major natural resource. Poaching has been banned in Kenya, but there is still the odd person or two who still engage in it.
We still have plenty of animals living in national parks in the country. Most tourists come to see the Big 5 (Lion, Elephant, Buffalo, Rhino and Leopard.) Big Game hunters says that these are the most dangerous animals and most difficult to hunt on foot too.
Please note that in this video, no animals were hurt. Roger used library videos for some parts. Bless him !
Song Nine: We Are Riding Along
Roger's old pal Alan and his wife Joan gave him and his wife natalie a treat to view game from above on a baloon.
This one of the exciting things to do in Kenya. The baloon rides are done at the Mara still. Expensive but exciting. Come ready to spend!
Song Ten: Come Back Again
This song is sad. Roger now has to live Kenya and go back to England. Its the feeling that I get when I visit parts of Kenya. Like its always sad to leave the coast or the rift valley.
The thing is, you become a part of the places that you visit and the only saving grace is that you always have the memory locked tight within your mind. And sometimes, that is all that you have. No picture, video or souvenir can capture what your heart captures.
I hope that you have enjoyed these videos and that you will come to Kenya and come back again and again.
