Business Kenya: Relocation Made Easy

Business Kenya

You may decide to relocate to Kenya after setting up a business or to retire. Whichever way, you will not regret moving to Kenya. Talk of year round sunshine, wonderful people and Kenyan food.

Now, let's look at some of the things that you may need to consider after setting up your business in Kenya

Importing Personal Items

The beauty of moving here as a result of setting up a business in Kenya is that you are allowed to import your personal effects such as cars, furniture duty free!!! You would require a valid vet licence to bring your pet.

Where to stay

Depending on the business in Kenya that you wish to set up, you are likely to like stay in Nairobi. It is the capital city and the hub of most business activity.

In the event that you decide to buy a house in Nairobi, I would recommend that you look for a place with multicultural communities where you can find others with like minds, interests and hobbies.

You will find multicultural communities in these Nairobi Estates. Westlands, Karen, Muthaiga, Runda, Lavington, Kyuna and Kitsuru. This list is not exhaustive.

At all cost, avoid these areas; Eastlands, Umoja, Kayole, Kariobangi etc. They tend to have a higher crime rate.

Schools. Schools. Schools

Most people that come to set up a business in Kenya prefer to relocate here with their families. When choosing a school for your children, I would recommend that you consider private international schools. That's just because they are very multi-cultural compared to local public or private schools.

Here is a list that you can choose a school from.

Braeburn School

International School

Rosslyn Academy

Brooke House School

Some of these schools follow American Cirriculum (Rosslyn School) while others follow the British systems (Braeburn and Brookehouse).

Most of them are situated near the multicultural communities. For instance Brookhouse School is near Karen, whereas Braeburn schools are in Lavington and Garden Estate.

Where to Shop

Being in business in Kenya you will want to know where to shop for stuff and where to get some good bargains too.

Household items: Your best bet is the supermarkets. Nakumatt Supermarkets has everything that you need under one roof. They also have many locations for your convenience.

There one at Karen serves Karen Estate residents. Nakumatt Westgate serves those in the Westlands area. Nakumatt village market serves residents close to village market. This includes Runda residents. There is also Nakumatt Prestige on Ngong Road, Nakumatt Junction, Nakumatt Thika Road. You can't go wrong with Nakumatt. Their customer service is excellent!!

Tuskys' Supermarket is also a good one. Their prices are slightly lower than Nakumatt, but their range of products and customer service may not quite match up. They are also well spread out through out Nairobi.

Uchumi Supermarket is the third best. It is partially owned by the government and it's name means 'Economy'. Though it was the first Kenyan supermarket, it has had its fair share of struggles. This is still evident in its stock and services. You may not find all that you need in Uchumi supermarkets. Nontheless, I would encourage you to shop their once in a while as it helps to build the local economy. uchumi

Clothing

You can shop for cloths in the malls. This includes Nakumatt Westgate Mall, Nakumatt Junction Shopping Mall, The Mall and Sarit Centre in Westlands, The Mall at Nakumatt Karen. However, you will soon find that some of these items are ridiculously expensive. Most people find it easier to shop abroad for clothing items. This is one of the drawbacks about living here as a result of being in business in Kenya.

We also have exhibition stalls in the Nairobi City centre. Exhibition stalls are shops that are a couple of feet wide. They house clothes that are from Turkey, Dubai, China and Bangkok. They are not as pricey as the malls though. But unlike the malls where pricey are fixed, you may have to negotiate your way to a good price.

Hospitals

We have many hospitals in Nairobi. I will list the ones that I know have good service.

Agha Khan Hospitals

Karen Hospital

Nairobi Hospital

UpperHill Medical Centre

This is near the Nairobi Hospital. It's a building complex that houses doctors with all sorts of specializations. They have an imaging centre in case you need and x-ray or an ultra sound done.

Opticians

Baus Opticians and Optica are the most common opticians in Nairobi.

Baus Opticians three branches in Nairobi. The one at Hilton Hotel and SixEighty Hotel are the most accessible. Optica has a branch along Moi Avenue, right next to the Nairobi Sports House.
