Beach Safari in Kenya
Tamarind Dhow
There is food and then there is FOOD! The seafood aboard the Dhow is to die for!
The Tamarind Dhow is a Swahili/Arabic wooden boat that has been turned into a cruise boat. It was originally built for trading purposes in the 1970’s between the Kenyan and Arabian coasts. It converted into a restaurant in 1986.
The magic about the Dhow is combination of the food, the live music played on board, the sea waves and the gentle setting sun (for dinner cruises).
The whole experience starts when you get off the gangplank and a waiter, dressed in traditional Arabic attire welcomes you, shows you to your table and serves you with ‘dawa’, a cocktail made with vodka, lime, honey, sugar and crushed ice. You can also have soft drinks if you do not take alcohol.
As soon as the Dhow sails of, the live band begins to play and the Dhow cruises around Mombasa. It then docks, food is prepared and served and it sails back after the meal.
They have lunch cruises as well as dinner cruises. The lunchtime cruise departs from the Tamarind jetty at.1.00 pm, cruises gently up the Tudor creek, to a quiet spot where the Dhow moors.
Delicious Tamarind seafood and a good selection of Kenya's fine seafood or a prime Kenyan fillet steak followed by fresh tropical fruit - salad, graces the lunch cruise table. This is then rounded off with Kenyan coffee and halwa. The exciting experience ends with the Dhow returning to the jetty at 3.00 p m.
For the dinner, the cruise commences at 6.30 pm and sails towards Fort Jesus. With the band playing, the African stars shining from the distant skies, the aroma of the delicious sea food prepared in the Swahili style takes you to another place. The Dhow sails back to the Tamarind jetty by 10:30pm
