Gede Ruins

Gede was a Swahili village that existed from the 12th century. The village had a mosque, palace, and large stone houses which are considered to have been complex in their time. The houses even had flush toilet and bathrooms with drainage. Within the site has been found items originating from China, India and Venice!

The village was abandoned over 600 years ago and nobody knows why. Many explanations have been offered such as invasion by Somalis and Wazimba, falling water table and destruction of Mombasa by the Portuguese. However, the Gede ruins are quite impressive and possibly the best archaeological site in Kenya.

The ruins are a good place to spend the afternoon as there is a lot to see. It would be good if you went in with a local guide as they will have stories upon stories to tell as they believe the place is haunted.
